About the Series
This season, we're connecting the dots between cutting-edge engineering, conservation, and academic insights to push the boundaries of bioacoustics technology. Laying the groundwork for our Bioacoustics Horizon Scan, we aim to capture where we are today and discuss critical context for the exploration of new frontiers to come. Join our meetups throughout the month to explore emerging tools for bioacoustic data collection, analysis, sharing, and policy integration. Tune in to explore what’s needed to unlock the field’s full potential.

Meetup 2: Data Networks and Platforms
Date & Time
Thursday, September 12, 2024 2:00-3:30pm UTC
About the Session
Despite the growing adoption of acoustic monitoring technologies, significant challenges persist in making vast datasets fully discoverable, comparable, and accessible. Frontline conservationists face technological and capacity barriers, and existing data suffers from biases in geographic coverage and species representation. Collaborative initiatives are crucial in addressing these challenges—reference libraries, data portals, and discussion forums play key roles in analyzing passive acoustics monitoring data, thereby increasing interoperability and improving data accessibility.
In this event, we'll bring together a panel of experts leading collaborative efforts that can transform acoustic data management. Their work is making data more accessible, discoverable, and comparable across various platforms and initiatives. Through such integrative approaches, we can improve interoperability and enable effective translation of data into actionable research and management insights.
Additionally, we will explore how the expansion of citizen science programs is boosting public engagement with soundscapes, which can be vital for supporting broader conservation efforts, enabling more people to contribute to and benefit from scientific research.
